What is stock exchange?
A stock exchange is a regulated marketplace where people buy and sell financial investments such as shares, bonds, and funds. It is like a supermarket — but instead of groceries, investors trade ownership and lending in businesses or governments.
When you buy share
You are buying a small piece of a company and become a part-owner.
When you buy a bond
You are lending money to a company or government in exchange for regular interest payments and repayment later.
When you invest in funds
(such as mutual funds or ETFs)
Your money is pooled with other investors to buy a collection of stocks, bonds, or other assets at once.
The exchange simply makes this process safe, transparent, and organized.
Stock exchanges:
Connect buyers and sellers
They match people who want to buy and sell investments — such as stocks, bonds, and funds — quickly and efficiently through an organized trading system.

What can I buy on a stock exchange?
Shares
Shares represent ownership in a company. When you buy shares, you become a part-owner and gain a claim on a portion of the company’s assets and profits. You may earn money through price increases and dividends.
Bonds
Bonds are debt instruments. When you buy a bond, you are lending money to a company, government, or other organization for a set period. In return, you receive interest payments, which may be fixed or variable, and your original investment is repaid at maturity.
Funds
An investment fund pools money from many investors and invests it in a diversified portfolio of assets such as stocks and bonds. Funds are typically managed by professional fund managers. They help reduce risk through diversification and allow investors to benefit from professional management and lower costs through economies of scale.
